A step-by-step guide to picking four products that suit Kathmandu's climate, your skin type and your budget.

Who it is for
Anyone in Nepal starting from zero, or restarting after too many products
What you get
A four-product routine you can explain and keep up for three months
Time needed
About 2 weeks to choose, 8 weeks to judge
A routine is not a collection. It is the smallest set of steps you will repeat on a bad day as well as a good one. Start with four products and add nothing until the first four have earned their place.
The order to apply things
Cleanser, then water-based layers, then creams, then sunscreen in the morning. Thin to thick. Wait around thirty seconds between steps if a product feels like it is pilling. At night, a treatment goes before moisturiser, not after.
Morning: cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen.
Evening: cleanse, treatment, moisturise.
Once or twice a week: a gentle exfoliant if your skin tolerates it.
Adjust for Nepal's seasons
The same four products can carry you through the year if you change texture. In Asar, reach for gels and lighter sunscreen. In Magh, add a cream and reduce exfoliation. The steps stay the same. Only the weight changes.
How long before you see results
Hydration shows up within days. Barrier and texture changes take two to four weeks. Pigmentation takes two to three months, and only if you are consistent with sunscreen. Give a product a fair run before you decide it does not work.
When to drop a product
If a product stings, causes a rash, or makes your skin worse after two weeks, stop it. One new product at a time is the only way to know what caused a reaction. Keep the packaging and the opening date so you can trace it.
Do I need a toner, essence and serum?
No. They can be enjoyable, but they are optional. Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen are the routine.
How much should a routine cost?
A sensible starter routine in Nepal does not need to be expensive. Spend on sunscreen and the cleanser, keep the rest simple.
Can I use the same products as my friend?
Only if your skin type and concerns match. Products are not universal, which is why patch testing matters.
What if my skin purges?
Some acne treatments cause a temporary flare in the first weeks. If it is severe, painful or lasts beyond a month, stop and get advice.
A worked example for oily, breakout-prone skin
Morning is a gentle gel cleanser, a light gel moisturiser and a fluid sunscreen. Evening is the same cleanser, a salicylic or benzoyl peroxide treatment on the spots only, and a light moisturiser. Once a week, skip the treatment. If your skin is dry and tight after this, your cleanser is too strong, not your moisturiser too weak.
A worked example for dry, sensitive skin
Morning is a rinse or a cream cleanser, a hydrating layer, a barrier cream and a sunscreen you find comfortable. Evening is a cream cleanser, a moisturiser applied to damp skin, and an occlusive layer on the driest patches. No acids, no scrubs, no new actives until the stinging stops.
How to know it is working
Comfort first, then texture, then tone. Skin that feels calm and looks slightly more even after a month is on the right track. Skin that is still stinging, flaking or breaking out after eight weeks of a simple routine needs a doctor, not another product.
