Who it is for
Beginners starting from zero, or restarting after too many products
What you get
A four-product routine you can explain and keep up for three months
Time needed
About 2 weeks to choose, 8 weeks to judge
Most beginners buy too many products on day one and give up by week three. A routine that survives is a short one. This is the five-step version that actually fits Kathmandu.
Step 1: Know your skin type first
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, apply nothing, and wait 30 minutes. Tight and flaky is dry. Shiny across the forehead and nose is oily. Shiny in the T-zone and comfortable elsewhere is combination. Skin that reacts easily to new products is sensitive.
Step 2: The four products you need
A cleanser, a moisturizer, an SPF 30+, and one active. Match the active to the concern you actually have: niacinamide for pores and dullness, vitamin C for pigmentation, hyaluronic acid for dryness.
Cleanser: gentle, rinses clean, does not leave skin tight.
Moisturizer: gel in summer, cream in winter.
SPF 30+ or higher, broad spectrum, applied every morning.
One active: niacinamide, vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. Not three.
Step 3: AM vs PM
AM: wash, treat, moisturize, SPF. PM: wash, treat, moisturize, sleep. If you wear makeup or spend the day in smog, double cleanse at night with an oil or balm first, then a gentle cleanser.
Step 4: The 5-minute fast version
Some mornings do not allow 15. The 5-minute version is 30 seconds of face wash, 30 seconds of moisturizer, 30 seconds of SPF, and you are out the door. That is enough for most days, and it is infinitely better than skipping.
Step 5: Build up slowly
Add one new product at a time and wait two weeks before adding another. Start with six actives and you cannot tell which one is doing anything, and you cannot tell which one is irritating you.
Wait two weeks between new products.
Keep a note of what you added and when.
If skin stings or reddens, pause the newest product first.
Do not introduce an active and a new cleanser in the same week.
A routine is not a collection. It is the shortest set of steps you will still repeat on a busy day, and the honest version of that is four products and a morning sunscreen.
Sunscreen. Nothing else in your routine matters if pigmentation keeps being triggered every day. If your barrier is already broken, fix the cleanser first and add SPF on day one.
Can I use the same routine in summer and winter?
Mostly yes. Change the moisturizer texture: gel in monsoon, cream in winter. The rest of the steps stay the same.
How long until I see results?
Texture and hydration show in one to two weeks. Pigmentation and oil control take eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. Anything faster is a claim, not a result.
Do I need a toner if I am a beginner?
No. A toner is optional, and rose water is a fine one if you enjoy it. Skip it until your four core products are habit.
