Kathmandu sits around 1,400 m under a hard sun. What SPF, PA and reapplication actually mean for a normal day in the Valley.

If you only change one thing in your routine this year, make it sunscreen. Kathmandu sits at roughly 1,400 metres, and air that thin filters less UV than the beach photos you grew up with. Add Valley dust, a scooter commute and a face you touch more often than you notice, and the sun quietly becomes the main driver of dark spots, uneven tone and early fine lines.
SPF is mostly about UVB, the part that burns. The PA rating, or the UVA circle on some Asian formulas, is about UVA, the part that ages skin and feeds pigmentation. For everyday use in Nepal, a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher with PA+++ is a sensible floor rather than a luxury.
SPF 30 filters around 97 percent of UVB when applied the way it was tested. SPF 50 is closer to 98 percent. That sounds like a tiny gap until you remember most people apply about a quarter of the tested amount. Application beats label numbers almost every time.
During Asar and Shrawan the sky can look grey for days and UV still comes through cloud. If you are outdoors between mid-morning and late afternoon, sunscreen is working in the rain too. Humidity changes the texture you want, not whether you need it.
Oily and combination skin usually prefers a fluid or gel-cream that dries down without a cast. Dry skin can layer a cream with glycerin or squalane underneath. If you wear makeup, pat the sunscreen in, wait a few minutes, then go in with base so it does not pill.
A hat, sunglasses and walking the shaded side of the street still matter. So does not picking at a spot that is already healing. Sunscreen is the cheapest anti-pigmentation step in Nepal, which is exactly why consistency matters more than the brand you choose.

SPF 30 is enough when you apply it properly. SPF 50 gives extra margin if you apply thinly, sweat a lot, or spend long stretches outdoors. Mixing the two over the week is fine.
Yes. UVA passes through cloud, and pigmentation does not take a holiday in Asar. Choose a lighter texture that feels comfortable in humidity.
A heavy cream can feel greasy in Kathmandu humidity. Look for gel, fluid or watery-essence textures and give them a few minutes to settle before judging.
It is better than nothing, but face formulas are tested for lighter layers and are less likely to clog pores. Keep the SPF lotion for arms and legs.
Most people who say they cannot wear sunscreen are trying to add it to an already crowded routine at 8:45 in the morning. Move it earlier. Apply it right after you wash your face, before breakfast, before your phone, before the scramble for keys. Those extra twenty minutes are what let it settle, and settled sunscreen is the difference between a smooth base and a face that shines by ten.
If you ride a scooter, choose something that dries down rather than staying tacky, because dust sticks to a wet finish and you will spend the rest of the day touching your face. Keep a second small tube in your bag or under the seat. Reapplying on the road, even imperfectly, does more for your skin than a perfect first application that never gets topped up.
If you take nothing else from this, take the habit. One product, applied most mornings, reapplied when you are out for long, is the foundation that makes every other step in your routine look like it is working.
