Your First Makeup Kit in Nepal: What to Buy, and in What Order

Most first makeup kits go wrong in the same way. Someone buys a full set of everything at once, uses three products, and the rest expires in a drawer. Buy in the order you will actually use things.

The five products that cover most days

Start with complexion, brows, mascara, blush and a lip colour. If you have clear skin, a tinted moisturiser or a light concealer on spots is enough. If you want more coverage, build it in thin layers instead of one heavy one.

• Complexion: a tinted moisturiser, BB cream or concealer that matches your undertone.
• Brows: a pencil or tinted gel, because brows frame the face faster than anything else.
• Mascara: waterproof in Nepal's monsoon, regular in winter is easier to remove.
• Blush: a cream formula blends with fingers and looks natural on most skin tones.
• Lips: one everyday shade you will actually reapply, plus a balm underneath.

Shade matching when the shop light lies

Shop lighting in Nepal can be warm and dim, which makes everything look two shades lighter. Swatch on your jawline, then step outside or look at it under your phone torch before deciding. For undertone, look at the veins on your wrist in daylight. Greenish usually means warm, bluish means cool, and a mix means neutral.

Textures that survive the weather

In humid months, cream blushes and liquid bases tend to settle better than heavy powder layers, which can go patchy on a sweaty commute. In winter, powder sets things and stops transfer. Keep a blotting paper or a light powder in your bag for the middle of the day rather than adding more product.

Tools and hygiene

Fingers work for cream products and cost nothing. For the rest, one sponge, one blush brush and one powder brush is genuinely enough. Wash sponges weekly and brushes every couple of weeks with a gentle soap, then dry them flat with the bristles slightly downward. Kathmandu dust plus a warm bathroom is a bad combination for damp tools left in a closed pouch.

Practising before the day you need it

Block one evening and do a full face with no plans and no rush. Take a photo in daylight, then wash it off and try again with less product. Most first attempts fail because too much base went on, not because the technique was wrong. If you have a festival or a wedding coming up, do not rehearse the look for the first time on the morning itself.

Practise your base, your brows and your lip separately. Those three carry the most resemblance to your everyday face, and getting them right makes everything else optional.

Buying without wasting money

Ask for a sample of any base you are considering, or buy the smallest size. Keep the receipts. Nepali shops vary in how easily they accept returns, and the sealed items are the ones that can be exchanged, so do not tear open a product until you are sure the shade works in daylight.

If you are choosing between one good product and three cheap ones, take the good one for the item you use daily. Cheap mascara and cheap blush can be perfectly fine, but a base that does not match your skin will ruin every photo no matter what else you own.
